    An Asmat Jipae Dance Costume
    Pupis Village, Wasar River, NW Asmat Area; Jipae costumes represent the recently deceased in the village, they represent both men and/or women and all have a personal name. The ceremony helps the spirits of the deceased pass over to the otherworld. Collected by Todd BarlinThese costumes were used in a 1989 Jipae Ceremony that I attended. I made many trips to the Asmat during the years 1985-1999 staying several months each trip. This was at a time when the area was mostly closed to foreigners.
