Lot Description:An Early Lute (hasapi)
Toba Batak, North Sumatra, Indonesia (nineteenth century)

Provenance:Sulawesi Arts, Bali; Acquired from above by Dr Peter Elliott in 1998

Notes:The extremity in form of bird. Body intricately carved geometrically as is the handle on the reverse of which is carved a lizard and a snake. The body and handle are heavily patinated with red and black pigment evident. An early example.
