With special reference to the results of government expeditions in the provinces of Auckland and Nelson. 1st English language ed. Stuttgart : J G Cotta, 1867. 4to. xvi, 515p. Frontispiece coloured plate, six coloured plates, ten black and white plates, illustrations, two folding coloured maps. 2627. Elaborately decorated green cloth. Some wear to binding. Some foxing/browning to contents. Letter dedicating the work to Queen Victoria tipped to reverse of frontispiece. Translated from the German original by Edward Sauter. Hochstetter, geologist to the Austrian Novara expedition, was granted nine months leave of absence to undertake a geological survey of part of New Zealand for the Government in 1859, his companions for much of the time being Captain Drummond-Hay, Haast, Koch (surveyor-artist) and Hamel (photographer). Hochstetter was a brilliant, careful and lively observer whose impressions of South Auckland, Waikato, the thermal regions and Nelson have an enduring interest and value. A better than usual copy, very scarce with the dedication letter. G to G+. -
