Inscription on front pastedown: 'Presented to / Mr Henry Hill BA, FGS / With warmest good wishes / from / the undersigned members of / The Hawke's Bay Philosophical / Institute in commemoration of / his 44 years' membership, & his / 50 years' residence in Napier / July 1928'. Signatories include J Allan Berry, Chas L Thomas, E S West and W Dinwiddie. The geography, natural history, changing landscape; Maori background and experiences of various owners including the author himself presented with knowledge, whimsicality and sensitive perception.
