  • Notes:
This painting is sold with a Waringarri Aboriginal Arts certificate which reads: "This work shows Gunowaggi (Well 33 on the Canning Stock Route) where the artist met Wally Dowling, the European stockman who first brought Rover to the Kimberley in the mid 1940's. This meeting marks a crucial transition in his life. Up until this period, the artist and his family were among the last Aboriginal people in the area to follow a traditional lifestyle. The artist was born nearby at Yalda Soak, and his parents and brother were buried in this country. After meeting Wally Dowling his contact with the gardiya (European) world began. It lead him to the Kimberley where he worked as a stockman and dreamt the corroboree that first inspired him to paint. In September 1995 the artist revisited his traditional country for the first time in over forty years. Seeing Gunowaggi again made him remember first meeting Dowling long ago. The painting shows a herd of bullocks coming to drink at the water trough there, as they did in the artist's days as a stockman. The black dots (left) are paperbark bushland. The yellow dots show the bullocks coming out of the bush and heading towards the water trough. The large circle is the water tank, and the smaller circles are marks made by the legs of the windmills which pump water out of the ground."
