  Frederick Rice Stack ‘View of the Wairoa Creek...’
  hand coloured lithograph from the rare pictorial publication ‘Views in the Province of Auckland, New Zealand’ (London 1862). 200 x 400. Stack, a professional army officer arrived in NZ in 1857, acted as staff officer to Gov. Wynard and to his successor Col. Gold, with whom he fell out, resulting in court-martial and dismissal. The sketches for the ‘Views’ and their publication was an attempt to support the artist whilst he awaited the outcome of his appeal against the dismissal. Cf.
