with sketches and letters.Lieutenant-Colonel Hugh Venables Vernon DSO 1st Light Horse Regiment AIF Awarded Mention in Despatches – 5th August 1915 Awarded Mention in Despatches – 1st June 1917 Awarded Mention in Despatches – 28th December 1917 Awarded Distinguished Service Order – 18th April 1918Hugh Venables Vernon, an architect of Turramurra, Sydney was born in England, 20 February 1877. He joined the NSW Lancers in Nov.vember 1897 and served in the South African Campaign, 1899-1900, receiving a Commission in July 1903. He remained on active strength with the NSW Lancers until August 1914 when he applied for a Commission in the 1st Light Horse Regiment, AIF at the age of 37. He embarked on A16 Star of Victoria 10 Oct.1914 to serve with the 4th Australian Division at Gallipoli and in France, serving as Major until Oct.ober 1918 when he was made Lieut. Colonel. He was mentioned in despatches at Anzac, February 1916 and in France, June and November 1917 and awarded the DSO in January 1918. He returned to Australia on HT Mahana, December 1918. His wife was the Secretary of the 1st Light Horse Comforts Fund. -
