    A vintage regimental drum major’s leopard skin ‘coat’
    the head with glass eyes, backed onto red felt lining, length from head to tail 1640. Drummers originally wore distinct uniforms so as to stand out on the battlefield and in some regiments it became the custom for the drum major to wear leopard skins over their uniforms. This had the dual purpose of protecting the uniform and the instruments.
