Five Watercolours
20.5 x 15cm (largest)
"A Tartar of Kazan"; "A Married Woman of Walday/Valday"; "A Female Peasant of Ingria"; "Woman from Ingria"; & "A Russian Woman." Each work with labels verso stating attribution & identifies works as studies for "The Costumes of the Russian Empire", pub. W Miller 1803. Le Prince was a student of Francois Boucher (1703-1770), & in 1758 he travelled to Russia to work for Catherine the Great at the Imperial Palace, St Petersburg. He remained in Russia for 5 years, & travelled through Finland, Lithuania & Siberia, returning to Paris in Dec, 1763 (5) -
