Dreaming Up the Victoria 1993
suite of 18 pastel and pencil works
75 x 54.5 cm (diptych 8 in total); 75 x 109.5 cm (10 single sheets) -
Notes:Reference: The artist's Day Books - July, 1993: 'It was soon after reading John Lort Stokes Discoveries in Australia: Journal of a Voyage of Discovery during the Voyage of HMS Beagle, 1837-1843 that I was in Timber Creek - formerly 'The Depot' where, in the 1930s we used to catch the boat around to Darwin ...It was 'high season'; a light plane near the Landing was offering 'scenic flights'. On a whim I decided to charter it and to follow the mighty river from its mouth to its source ... And so, drawing continually, I was able to trace from the air - and in the space of a few hours - the same journey Stokes and his men had taken over a month to traverse 150 years earlier ...' Titles for Dreaming up the Victoria derive mainly from Stokes' lively Journal. Refer also: www.elizabethdurack.com
