    A Chinese Carved Wooden Figure of Guanyin, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)
    here the 'thousand-armed' bodhisattva, with the important figure of Amitabha in her diadem, is seated in dhyanasana with both feet covered, the hands in front as vitarkamudra, the nine pairs of arms behind showing various mudras and each with urna within the open palm, polychrome application, 120cm high

    Purchased in Singapore in 1981; Ex Private Collection, Singapore, prior to 1981
  • Notes:
    The legend of Guanyin and ‘the thousand arms’ refers to how the ever benevolent Amitabha assisted Guanyin by appointing her with a thousand arms to assist with her desire to be able to reach out to all those in need.
