    Hanging scroll (framed)
    91.5 x 32.3cm (actual image); 123.5 x 46.5cm with frame
    Dated Summer of 1893
    the lady standing atop a bamboo boat on a lotus pond, paddling as her robes are flowing in the breeze around her.
  • Notes:
    This figure may represent one of China’s Four Great Beauties, Xishi. It was said that Xishi’s beauty was so great that when she leaned over the pond, the fish were so dazzled by her appearance, that they forgot how to swim. In accordance with the legend, Xi Shi was often depicted on a fishing boat, roaming like a fairy in the misty wilderness of Taihu Lake. (some stains and foxing to lower part of scroll)
