  • Notes:
This painting is sold with a Waringarri Aboriginal Arts certificate. For the doyen of the early painting movement at Warmun, Queenie McKenzie, this painting carries a high degree of personal significance. Its main subject is the large hill that dominates the picture plane. This is Garloomboony, an important sacred site for Gija people. The artist was able to see this hill from a house at Warmun on Turkey Creek in which she lived for a number of years. In some respects, the work may be considered a view through a window, a perspective enhanced by the painted rectangle that frames the landscape. This 'frame' however is common to many of McKenzie's paintings. In the ancestral past, Garloomboony was a man who had an encounter with a Mirriwoong man before travelling to Boolmoowiny and Jadibany, two hills that are depicted in the lower centre of the painting, on what is now Texas Downs Station, where the artist was born. Below these is a series of ridges. Across the middle of the painting McKenzie has depicted white gum trees, konkerberry bushes and dry grass. Wally Caruana
