Lot Description:1869 (Feb 28) cover to Italy unusually 'via Marseilles' with Small Chalons 2d blue x2 & 6d yellow-green
tied by light but legible Rays '79' cancels of 'GAINSFORD' (b/s), faint French mailboat transit cds in red on the face, very fine '11 M/FIRENZE/MAG 12/69' arrival b/s, docketing on the face & minor repaired flap fault. A rare destination from Queensland. [

Notes:P&O ships terminated at Sydney. Although there were experimental voyages via Torres Strait in the mid-1860s, the Torres Strait Route did not officially open until 1873. This cover was taken south to Sydney to connect with 'Avoca', departed Sydney 27/3/1869]
