  INWARDS MAIL: 1831 outer from England endorsed 'Per Exmouth/15 March 1831' & 'On the Service of the Australian Agricultural Compy', to 'Captn Sir Wm E
  no outwards markings so apparently carried privately & placed in the mails at Sydney where rated '6d' = 4d internal carriage + 2d captain's gratuity, very fine strike of the 'SYDNEY/NSW/JY 24/1831' cds (the outer frame worn-away) in blue on the face, ironed-out vertical fold clear of the cds. Acquired at the Prestige auction of 22/2/2013 for $1035.

  Between 1817 & 1827, William Edward Parry was involved in exploration in the Canadian Arctic, for which he was knighted. In 1829, he arrived in NSW as Commissioner for the Australian Agricultural Company. This semi-autonomous million acre fiefdom based around Port Stephens was established as a British 'factory' for wool and crops. Over the objections of Sir Thomas Mitchell, Parry was responsible for exchanging those parts of the grant he deemed unsuitable for prime agricultural land on the Liverpool Plains. About 250 convicts were assigned to the company. One of Parry's significant detractors was the company's accountant, William Barton, father of Australia's first Prime Minister Edmund Barton.
