Lot Description:Nine vintage photographs taken on the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913) by E. McKenzie
McKenzie was the leading stoker on the expedition ship Terra Nova, the images include the ship trapped in ice, his name engraved to the plate, a figure on skis with poles, four standing figures at the bow of the ship standing upon ice, a figure on skis surrounded by penguins, the ship trapped in ice behind, a side view of the ship showing rigging and a plank to the ice with single figure, another side view of the ship, a view of the deck with dogs, supplies and figure, a hut with figure and dog, the last of two figures possibly checking ice depths with poles, a rope lashed to the foreground. 83 x 108 each. Held within a later album. Note: the photographer McKenzie was a teenager when on the expedition, he had lied about his age to enter the Navy. A receipt included from the Canterbury Museum acknowledging a ‘Collection of Glass Negatives taken on the Terra Nova Expedition (1910-12) by E.D. McKenzie, leading stoker)’, dated 1972. -
