    A pewter inlaid and bone mounted walnut armchair by Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940), Italian, circa 1910
  • Notes:
    Born in Milan on 16th February 1856 the son of sculptor and architect Giovanni Luigi Bugatti. Carlo Bugatti trained at the Brera Academy, Milan and later at the Académie des Beaux Arts, Paris. Infuenced by 'New Art' Bugatti became prominent for his highly detailed works in ceramics, silverware and textiles. His furniture was first exhibited at the Fine Arts Fair Milan in 1888. With further furniture displays at international exhibitions in London, Amsterdam and Milan. Bugatti was awarded an honorary prize for his designs in London and built up a following for his furniture in New York with his pieces adorning a stand at the Waldorf Astoria's Turkish Salon.
