Lot Description:1884 MELBOURNE CUP - MALUA: Pair of cast iron horse's head hitching posts
with brass plaque 'Presented to J.O.Inglis - MALUA- Melbourne Cup, 1884'. Very attractive and scarce (also very heavy 80kg each!). [The Ballarat Brewing Company each year from 1875 to 1910 presented the owners of the winning Melbourne Cup horse with one or a pair of these posts. They were made at the Ballarat Iron Foundry, and each post carried a brass plate giving details of the owner, horse and date. It is rare to find a matching pair]. -
Notes:Malua was the most versatile Australian Thoroughbred racehorse in history, winning over distances ranging from 5 ? furlongs to 3 ? miles (1,100 - 5,200 metres).Malua was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2003, and a memorial to him was erected in October 2009 at the Deloraine Museum, in the town where he was born
