Lot Description:Air Marshall Sir RICHARD WILLIAMS: WW1 period timber foot locker/trunk, with 'LIEUT. COL. R WILLIAMS AUST. FLYING CORPS' painted on the front
Accompanied by a pair of flying gloves, goggles & group photograph titled 'Officers & Cadets, No.2 Two Squadron Station, Australian Flying Corps, Leighterton, February 1919'. Height 23cm, width 85cm, depth 53cm -
Notes:Sir Richard is credited with establishing the RAAF with a long & illustrious career spanning both world wars & received a KBE, CB & DSO (Distinguished Service Order) among other awards. Williams was the first student to graduate to pilot in the inaugural Point Cook flying school in Aug 1914. His war record was served with distinction in both Europe & the Middle East. He soon rose to Chief of Air Staff (CAS) in 1922 where he remained for 3 terms (17 years) longer than any other officer to hold this appointment. During WW2 Williams served in England RAAF Headquarters Overseas. After the war he went on to serve as Director-General of Civil Aviation until 1955. In 1989 the Point Cook & Laverton air bases were merged & renamed in his honour. He also has an avenue in Adelaide named after him.
