  • Notes:
Sir Arthur Streeton is one of Australia's most revered artists and a founder of Australian Impressionism. His prominence in the history of Australian art is recognised with his work represented in national, state, regional and university collections and has been an essential inclusion in major survey exhibitions of Australian art, such as Golden Summers: Heidelberg and Beyond (1985), The Face of Australia (1988) and Federation: Australian Art and Society 1901-2001 (2000-02). Streeton led a rather peripatetic life between 1897 and 1920, spending significant periods in Cairo, Italy and the United Kingdom, with his London years being from 1908-14. On the strength of extremely successful exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney in 1906-07, he also achieved his highest commercial recognition in London. This enabled him to marry a Canadian violinist called Nora Clench and they honeymooned in Venice in 1908, where he made a number of paintings that were well received in Paris and America. During his time in London, Streeton also sought inspiration from the works of his British contemporaries and earlier artists - like Philip Wilson Steer, John Constable and Joseph Turner - frequently painting the romantic subjects of castles and abbeys including Chepstow, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles and Melrose, Tintern and Kelso Abbeys. At the time that Kelso Abbey was painted in 1909, he was also elected a Member of the prestigious Royal Society of British Artists, London and held solo and group exhibitions in London, Melbourne and elsewhere. Streeton made a number of works of the Romanesque ruins of Kelso Abbey in Scotland, near the English border, in 1902 and 1909. These included small works on paper, as well as oil paintings. In Kelso Abbey, Streeton has captured the grandeur of the remains of the Abbey, rising up from its picturesque setting. Dr Shireen Huda
