Victorian Sterling Silver 'Duty Dodger' Sauce Boat
bearing the cancelled marks apparently for John Edwards, London, 1735, and the London Assay Office Mark Ref 5113, plain oval body with shaped rim and double looped scroll handle, on molded spreading foot, total weight 425gm, h 10cm
  • Provenance:
Purchased: Lawsons Auctions, 1980, with original Eggleton notes
  • Notes:
In 1720, a duty of sixpence per ounce was applied to silver. Silversmiths were frequently tempted to avoid or reduce the impost by recycling old hallmarks or submitting a very much lighter piece of silver for assay and inserting the marks into a much heavier piece, which appears to be the case in this instance. " The hallmarking act of 1973 substantially altered the law about dubious pieces. It was an offence, until the Act came into force, to knowingly possess a piece with forged or transposed marks including a duty dodger. Such a piece could not be legally sold unless the old marks were obliterated and fresh ones put on. This was unsatisfactory from the point of view if the forgery or the transposition was an old one. The old marks are always of interest and new marks on a piece are out of character and period. Now the old marks do not have to be obliterated providing they were struck on the article or transposed into it before 1854. They are instead cancelled with a thin line.
