    Australian Sterling Silver Trophy Shield F. Basse
    marked F. Basse, Adelaide, c.1887, of shield form with easel back, surmounted by a crown with applied wreath enclosing engraving 1887 above which is "Volunteer Challenge Shield/Won By/Capt D Drysdale/V.F", total weight 95gm 13cm x 9cm

    Purchased: Alan Landis, 1980, with original Eggleton notes
  • Notes:
    "This trophy is obviously one of the local volunteers and the V.F, after captain Drysdale's name probably stands for Volunteer Force. Derek Whitelock, in his book Adelaide 1836-1976 writes "Adelaide now had a Fire Brigade, established in 1882, but was often agitated about defence. There were mounted police, the volunteers and the rifles..." (page 114). At the time the volunteers were said to be a force numbering about 3,000 auxiliaries" Brian Eggleton
