Lot Description:Books Clarendon's English Civil War
CLARENDON, Edward, Earl of. The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in England, Begun in the Year 1641.Oxford, Printed at the Theatre, 1707. Six volumes complete. First octavo edition.Approx. 245 plates (see note below), 3 volumes bound in six parts, each part with separate title page as issued. Vol 1 - (6),25,(1),288,(2)-720pp. Vol.2 - (10),466,(2),-753pp. Vol.3 - (16),364,(2),-773pp., followed by (74)pp. index. All edges gilt. Bound c.1820 in green straight-grain morocco, mellowed to brown on spines as very often with this colour, boards panelled with broad rolls and fillets in gilt and blind, spines with raised bands and elaborately gilt-decorated panels. Some minor rubbing to spine edges, now treated with conservation dressing. A finely 'Grangerised' copy, interleaved with approx. 245 mounted or inset 18th and early 19th century etched, engraved and aquatint portraits and topographical views, bound in at the appropriate place in the text.
