    A Sam Colt model 1849 Pocket Revolver , Dr John Kintzing Kane, 1862
    Colt owned by Dr John Kintzing Kane, 1862 A Sam Colt model 1849 Pocket Revolver with serial number 204892 in five places, 23 cm and thus produced in 1862, when Kane was engaged at the Cairo Hospital, Illinois during the Civil War. Walnut grips, Sam Colt’s address to upper 9.5 cm barrel, some loss of filigree to cylinder, with number 2 engraved to barrel flange, and cleanly engraved ‘Dr. John K. Kane’ as shown. In a walnut box, 28 x 15 x 5 cm, including box of unopened combustible envelope cartridges, an Eley London tin case of detonators, Colt’s patent slug cast, 9 bullets, and cleaning equipment. Brass-hinged, black velvet innards, no key. Dr Kane was born in 1833, the son of eminent U.S. politician, the Hon. John K. Kane. His brother was the celebrated Colonel Thomas L Kane of the Bucktail Regiment of Pennsylvania, during the Civil War. Dr Kane searched for his brother Elisha Kane, the arctic explorer in an 1856 expedition to the Northern Seas into Greenland.
