    Rare Marquesan Islands Male Ancester Figure
    Flattened square base with strong cylindrical legs partly covered with a traditional costume over the torso and hands resting on the abdomen, the short neck leading to the domed head with incised mouth baring teeth and a tongue, a broad nose and large round eyes with a raised brow framed by pierced ears showing adornments. Traditional tattoo designs cover the legs and arms; Dry weathered light brown patina. Early Marquesas Islands Wooden figures, tiki akau, where crafted in the first half of nineteenth century or earlier. Hooper (1997), citing Handy, explains that they represent tribal deified ancestors - leaders and priests who were famous in their time and whose minds became the tutelary deities of the clan probably arranged behind a Marae.
