Notes:Sotheby's catalogue with the following details: The present work dates from the mid-1830’s after the artist William West had completed the circular extension to the tower of the windmill scene on the immediate left and before the ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone of the Clifton Suspension Bridge on 27th August 1836. In the foreground, Jackson appears to show a surveyor signalling to another along the river at the entrance to Nightingale Valley. A view showing the same view but with the Suspension Bridge in place was sold by Sotheby’s on 19th July 1979, Lot 163. We are grateful to Francis Greenacre for his help in cataloguing this watercolour.
