  • Notes:
Andrew Browne is a highly-accomplished Melbourne-based artist who is primarily known for his paintings, but frequently engages with photography, both as a medium and as an artistic aid. In Trees and Billboard at Speed, Browne juxtaposes in characteristic fashion the almost-ethereal beauty of the natural environment (silhouetted trees) with the starkly-delineated lines and harsh colour of the man-made environment (billboard) as seen from a speeding car. Alan Dodge expressed Browne's subject matter poetically: "The artist has explored qualities of day and night and the evasive light and forms from the time in between - those liminal moments that were so seized upon in 19th century Romantic paintings to convey the transcendental sublime in nature. However, in Browne's case, the arena is the greater urban scene, a contemporary landscape of equivocal elements: car parks, streetlights, billboards, and the edges of architecture."1 Browne has been included in well over 50 group exhibitions, as well as having numerous solo shows and a mid-career survey exhibition, Andrew Browne: Painting Light, at the Bendigo Art Gallery in 1999. His works are represented in a multitude of public and corporate collections including the National Gallery of Victoria, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Monash Gallery of Art, TarraWarra Museum of Art, Bendigo Art Gallery, the ANZ Collection, the British Museum in London, Wesfarmers Collection in Perth, the City of Melbourne Collection and the Lowenstein's Arts Management Collection in Melbourne.
