    Outstanding group of 6 to Warrant Officer I Frederick William James, RNZA.
    (i) Queen's South Africa Medal 1899-1902 w/3c 'Cape Colony', 'Transvaal' and 'South Africa 1902' 95297 Tpr F W James, NZMR 8th Cont.). (ii) War Medal 1939-45. (iii) New Zealand War Service Medal 1939-4. (iv) Permanent Forces of the Empire Beyond the Seas Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, King George V (Field Marshal) (1134 S/Sgt FTR. F W James, RNZA). Granted 1 May 1924. 166 medals awarded. (v) New Zealand Meritorious Service Medal, King George V (Field Marshal) (S/Sgt F W James, RNZA). Granted 1 April 1927. 168 of these medals awarded. (vi) New Zealand Long and Efficient Service Medal (S/Sgt FTR. F W James, RNZA). Granted 9 April 1922. With a detailed record of service and obituary by Captain G T Stagg; also photocopy of a portrait.

  • Notes:
    Frederick William James was born on 4 February 1884. He joined No 2 Company NZ Engineers at Dunedin on 4 October 1899. After service in South Africa he joined Royal NZ Engineers in 1906 and transferred to RNZ Artillery in 1907, remaining with the Regiment until 1928 when he transferred to NZ Army Ordnance Corps. He retired in 1939 after 33 years and 121 days service. On 6 October 1939, however, he was recalled to service in NZAOC, transferring to NZEME in 1946. Between 1948 and 1951 he was on the strength of the NZ Regiment and was finally discharged on 7 March 1951. He completed 50 years and 88 days service (5 years and 1 day as volunteer service. He died in September 1955 aged 71 years. His service was regarded as the longest in the NZ military forces.
