  • Notes:
The star of Chevrolet's lineup in 1953 was a 2-door Hardtop called the "Bel Air." An inspired design, during the ensuing years the Bel Air became a great sales success; it is very sought after today among astute collectors. The Bel Air was Chevrolet's top-of-the-line series, better equipped than the 210 or 150 models. 1953 was also the year Chevy finally introduced a one-piece front windshield and did away with the floor mounted starter button in favor of key starting. The 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air Hardtop Coupe presented here presents itself in excellent, thoroughly restored condition, equipped with a multitude of options. This remarkable example was sold factory direct on the 11th February 1953 to a Mrs Emma Rottensperger of Pittsburgh,PA. Background: Sold new on the 11th February 1953 to Mrs Emma Rottensperger of Pittsburgh,PA. The car was highly equipped for the day. Besides the rare 2-Door Hardtop body style, Mrs Rottensperger added Power-glide transmission, power steering ( expensive rare and addition for the early 50's) AM push-button radio, two tone paint, luggage lamp, oil filter, turn signals, back up lamps, and Automatic transmission fluid heater. Total price was $2,608-70, no trades, no financing i.e. Cash up front. After 40 odd years the car was sold to Mr Mastin of North Carolina with 73,000 miles on the clock. Mr Mastin did a frame-off restoration to occupy his retirement years. His parents had owned the same model Belair. He finished it in the period correct colours of Target Red & Indian Ivory. Upon his death, the car was willed to his son, who sold it in late 2012 to its current New Zealand custodian. It is with doubt the finest example of the iconic Bel Air in New Zealand.
