  • Notes:
King was an important Victorian painter of landscapes and genre scenes. Born in London, he worked for three years as a glass painter before studying with the Victorian artist William Bromley. His art really flourished when he moved to Paris to study under Leon Bonnat (1833-1922) and Fernand Cormon (1854-1924). In 1885 he wrote and illustrated an article for the Magazine of Art entitled ÒA Round in France,Ó a pictorial and written tour of the Brittany countryside. While his rustic genre scenes are typically Victorian, his technique - working 'en plein air' and infusing his scenes with a bold colour palette Ð shows the influence of the French School of Realism and Impressionism. As an artist, King had a long and successful career. Between the years 1874 and 1924 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street), the New Watercolour Society, the Grosvenor Gallery and other institutions. In 1879 he became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists, and in 1886 he was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, later becoming the group's Vice President. Yeend King exhibited works throughout Europe and the United States Ð winning medals in Paris, Berlin and Chicago. His paintings can be found in Major Museum and private collections. In 1898 his picture ÒMilking TimeÓ was bought by the Tate Gallery.
