Lot Description:C - WRECK MAIL: 1908 (June 17) cover from GB to New Zealand "Via San Francisco"
the back endorsed "In the wreck of the Aeon from Frisco" with an October arrival machine cancel of Palmerston North. The "Aeon" was wrecked on Christmas Island on 18th July, the crew and passengers being stranded on the island for over two months until rescued on September 22nd (after the captain had sailed to Fanning Island in a lifeboat). The surviving mails were also then taken off, finally arriving in early October, three months after the ship originally left San Francisco.
