Notes:Originally Named Ss Cape Clear It Was Built In 1881 At The R. Steel And Company Shipyard At Greenock, Scotland. The New Iron Hulled Ship Was 89 Metres Long And 12 Metres Wide. It Displaced 2,439 Tons And Was Originally A Pure Cargo Vessel. The Ship Was Constructed For Abram Lyle And Sons Of Greenock. Its First Use Was Transporting Migrants To Tasmania From Europe. In November 1884 It Was Purchased By The Union Steam Ship Company Of New And Renamed Ss Tekapo. After The Purchase The Tekapo Was Modifed By Denny And Brothers Of Dumbarton To Carry Cargo As Well As Passengers. In Its Day It Was One Of The Bigger Ships Operating In The Australian Region. The Tekapo Commenced Its Final Voyage On 16 May 1899, Leaving Sydney Harbour To Travel To Port Kembla. Running Into Heavy Fog Just 14 Kilometres Out Of Sydney Harbour, The Tekapo Struck The Southern Headland Of Maroubra Beach And Settled On Flat Rocks. Attempts By Tugs To Refloat The Vessel Were Unsuccessful, And Salvage Commenced.
