Notes:Sir Sidney Robert Nolan is one of Australia's best-known painters, printmakers and indeed, storytellers. Influenced by the likes of Cezanne, Van Gogh, Picasso, Miro and Danila Vassilieff, Nolan was part of the 'Heide Circle' that enjoyed a close relationship with and patronage of John and Sunday Reed. He began the infamous 'Ned Kelly' series in 1946 while at Heide, and set about telling stories of a folk hero in an otherwise sombre time of the Depression. Nolan would look to 'myths of the past' for the rest of his career in an attempt to 'explain the present.' In 1949 Nolan travelled extensively throughout Australia in an attempt to discover the 'real' Australia. In the same year, he painted The Camel Driver in his characteristic yet unusual technique of working with enamel paint on board. In the wake of his travels, Nolan wrote of how he initially struggled to make sense of what he saw; and similarly his wife Cynthia would note that he became obsessed with and was 'dreaming camels'. He would work over the following four years to deliver stories of both explorer and landscape in paint, inextricably linked, as we see here in this fine work. The works of Sidney Nolan are held in all state and many regional and university galleries, Tate Gallery, London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Melinda Melrose
