Notes:One of Australia's most popular artists, and certainly one of the most original interpreters of the Australian landscape in the 1960s, John Olsen has spent his life exploring the 'totality of landscape'. His works are held in all state and many regional galleries throughout Australia, and having become a trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1978, he continues to exert a valued influence on art affairs throughout Australia. Following periods of study at the Datillo Rubbo, Julian Ashton and Auburn art schools in the late 1940s and early 1950s, in 1957 a local art critic raised funds to send Olsen to Europe. While studying printmaking in Paris and then Spain, he sent exhibitions to Sydney and Melbourne from 1958-59. When he returned to Australia in early 1960s, his work displayed European influences of colour and formal composition in an entirely unique way.In Poet's garden Olsen adopts an aerial perspective, typical of his earlier works. Careful not to label his work as 'abstraction', here he presents a deconstruction (or in his own words an exploration) of both colour and composition to evoke his subject, in the same way a poet composes elements of language to evoke meaning. Painted in 2005, the same year Olsen won the Archibald, this work has inspired the reproduction of a popular series of limited edition prints based on this original image. Melinda Melrose
