  • Notes:
Widely regarded as Australia's finest living lyrical figurative expressionist painter, Garry Shead was largely influenced by his friend William Dobell, and had early success with school art prizes and the like in his youth. Shead attended the National Art School in Sydney in the 1960s, and was one of the youngest Archibald exhibitors ever in 1961 at the age of 19. Around this time he began work as a cartoonist for a number of magazines, which would later bring him into contact with art critics and the wider world of Sydney journalism. As well known for his portraiture as for his cartoon satire, Shead was a regular finalist in the Archibald from 1961-2000, winning the prize in 1993. He held more than 30 solo exhibitions between 1966-2006, and his work is held in notable major collections such as the National Gallery of Australia and the Art Gallery of NSW. Melinda Melrose
