1st English language ed. Stuttgart : J G Cotta, 1867, 4to. xvi, 515 p. plates. illus, maps. Elaborately decorated green cloth with front cover vignette. Lacking title page. Foxing to contents. Translated from the German original by Edward Sauter. Hochstetter, geologist to the Austrian Novara expedition, was granted nine months leave of absence to undertake a geological survey of part of New Zealand for the Government in 1859, his companions for much of the time being Captain Drummond-Hay, Haast, Koch (surveyor-artist) and Hamel (photographer). Hochstetter was a brilliant, careful and lively observer whose impressions of South Auckland, Waikato, the thermal regions and Nelson have an enduring interest and value. G/G-. -
