Lot Description:An interesting 9ct gold, greenstone and diamond leaping marlin brooch
inscribed to reserve and with makers mark of S.D. & Co. for Stewart Dawson & Co. Inscribed ‘To Capt. L. Mitchell /from/ Mr R Grey/ Russell/1927’. It would appear to have a direct link with Zane Grey’s fishing expeditions to New Zealand in the late 1920s. Captain L.D Mitchell was closely associated with Grey’s schooner ‘Fisherman’ and also held the record for the largest black marlin ever caught on a rod and line (976 lbs, in 1926, off Cape Brett). Mitchell served in WWI in the Royal Engineers, working in Abercrombie and Fitch’s tackle department following the war. ‘Mr R Grey’ could either be Zane’s son Romer Grey (1909-1976) who later achieved fame as a director, or Zane’s brother, Romer Carl (‘Reddy’) Grey (1875-1934), a well-known baseball player. Both individuals accompanied Zane Grey on his travels to New Zealand. -
