  • Lot Description:
A Maori anchor stone of double ridged form
the two flattened ovoid sections with worn grooved centre, mid/dark grey tone. Provenance as supplied by our vendor: This anchor was first noticed by a European farmer who regularly used the mouth of the Motueka River for access to the sea for fishing. This was in the early 1950s. He had seen it on numerous occasions but had not retrieved it. It occurred to him that it may have been an anchor because when he thought about it, there were no other rocks anywhere near, this is a sandy mouth. He spoke with local Maori and discovered that this was a well known route to inland areas and that early Maori used this area for gathering shell fish and going out to sea. There was also a Maori settlement not far from the river mouth. He retrieved the anchor in 1957 and it sat in his garden for the next 35 years well after this gentleman had passed away. 450 x 145 x 270. Being assessed for registration.
