Lot Description:A Chinese Qing Dynasty Gilt Bronze Figure of Hvashang
seated on a naturalistic base, hlding a persimmon in his left hand, 19th century. Height: 17 cm. -
Notes:Hvashang is a Chinese Buddhist monk, or patron to the Sixteen Great Elders (or Arhat - principal students of Shakyamuni Buddha). It is believed Hvashang was sent to India around the 14th century by the Tang emperor Taizong, to invite the Buddha Shakyamuni to visit China and extend his teachings. The Buddha had passed away by the time Hvashang arrived, so the invitation was extended to the Sixteen Great Arhats. He is regarded as a patron as he passed the invitation to the Elders.
