  • Notes:
Paul Partos is considered one of Australia's most accomplished abstract painters. He was deeply influenced by the New York School, Abstract Expressionism in particular, but also the work of Frank Stella, Kenneth Noland, Barnett Newman, Willem de Kooning and Picasso. Born in Czechoslovakia, Partos trained at RMIT in Melbourne in the early 60s alongside Robert Jacks, Guy Stuart, George Baldessin, John Buckley and Gareth Sampson. Untitled 1999 is an outstanding example of work that is characteristically Partos. The work is contained by his trademark border framing the ever-present grid that developed shortly after returning to Melbourne from his 18-month stint in Europe. Untitled comes from a period in Partos' career of revitalized colour, challenging critics who at the time felt his work had reached an impasse. The grid is a product of the artist focusing on expressive or restrained marks and gestures to convey the artist's emotional and inner world, and as critic John McDonald suggests, articulates an air of mystique: 'There is a sense of mystery about these paintings, as though they are filled with burning secrets but that powerful emotions are held in check... At first glance Partos's work might seem extraordinarily beautiful; over time, that beauty gained depth and complexity.1 Paul Partos has been represented in important solo and group exhibitions in Australia and abroad, notably at the San Francisco Museum of Art, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Serpentine Gallery in London, Heide Museum of Modern Art, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian Embassy in Tokyo. In 1992 he was awarded an Australia Council Fellowship Grant, and his work is held in major state and regional collections throughout Australia, as well as several important corporate collections. 1 John McDonald, 'A bold explorer of inner space', Sydney Morning Herald, 22 January 2003
