Lot Description:ANDREW KIPPIS, THE LIFE OF CAPTAIN JAMES COOK
[Dublin : Chamberlaine, Colles, et al., 1788] 1st Irish edition, issued in the same year as the first London edition; 8vo, contemporary calf, the spine with gilt and contrasting label, blank endpapers, xvi, 527pp, bookplate of William Blair of Blair to front paste down. -
Notes:The first biography of Cook. With access to Admiralty records and Joseph Banks’ papers, Kippis was able to present a good account of Cook’s public and professional life. The work is most valuable for the account of Cook’s death, drawn directly from Samwell’s published account.
