the comb with a fitted box, 12.2cm wide, 11.8cm diam (2).
  • Provenance:
    The Hsiao family collection, Melbourne
  • Notes:
The tripod inkstone in this lot is likely the base of a type of covered bronze inkstone predominantly dated to the Eastern Jin to Six Dynasties period. Inside the inkstone normally there is a grinding stone, similar to those from the Han dynasty. The period shortly after the Eastern Han dynasty is an important transition period in the forms of inkstone, where the grinding stones are gradually discontinued due to the development in inkstick. For similar and complete covered inkstone of such kind, see Nanchang City Museum, access path ??????/???/?????????and one previously in the Robert Ellsworth collection, Christie's, New York, 20 Mar 2015, lot 703.
