  A Ding-ware 'twin fish' bowl
  Northern Song/ Jin Dynasty, 12th century
  with a fitted box, 20.4cm diam., 6.3cm high

• References:
  Compare a large Dingyao bowl of similar form carved with twin fish in waves on the interior, which was excavated from a Liao/ Jin tomb in Xingren Village, Sanhe county, Hebei, and illustrated in Kaogu, 1993, No. 12, in a line drawing on p. 1087, fig. 4:5. Also see Sotheby's, London, 11 May 2016, lot 29.
• Notes:
  Rafi Mottahedeh (1901-1978) and Mildred Mottahedeh (1908-2000) were the founders of Mottahedeh & Company, a designer and supplier of luxury porcelain based on historical models. The couple also gathered a large personal collection of antiques, mainly Chinese export porcelain, amongst which were also some very fine Chinese antiques, including imperial porcelains and important archaic bronze ritualwares. Following Mr Mottahedeh's passing, Sotheby's held a sale, Fine Chinese Works of Art Including Property From the Estate of Rafi Y. Mottahedeh, in New York on 4 Nov 1978. And following Mrs Mottahedeh's, the company held another sale, mostly of export porcelain. Lally & Co's name can often be found in the chain of provenance on pieces previously from the Mottahedeh collection, usually dated to the early 1990s.
