Lot Description:A gilt silver 'peacock' casket-box and cover
Tang dynasty style, probably later
6.8cm H, 8.0cm W, 7.6cm D -
Provenance:The Hsiao family collection, Melbourne
-
Notes:Compare with another silver box of slightly larger size, excavated in Hejia Village in Shaanxi province in 1970. The decoration of each facet, except for very few unnoticeable details, is near identical between this lot and the example from Hejia Village. The manufacturing details however, comparing with what is observed in Huawu Datang Chun: Hejiacun Yibao Jingcui, vary somewhat in the soldering of the base, attaching of the gaskets, and fastening of the hinge. See ibid., Wenwu Publishing, 2003, p.196-201, no.46.
