  • Notes:
In 2011, authorities in Tokyo cancelled some of the annual cherry blossom festivals (hanami) as a mark of respect for the many people who lost their lives as a result of the earthquake/tsunami and unfolding nuclear crisis in Fukushima. However, when I travelled to Tokyo at that time, I was surprised by the resilience of the Japanese people and their need to keep the ancient blossom festival tradition alive. It was Spring and I had the chance to photograph the first blossoming after what is now known as the Great East Japan Earthquake of Friday 11 March 2011. The evening I arrived in Tokyo the city was in half light, no longer the bright and electric: in the metropolis of neon, the atmosphere was subdued and eerie. As with most Japanese gardens, it is a constructed place - a world where one can contemplate the inner-self as a way of opening up to a bigger picture. In this sense, for me, the Japanese garden is analogous with the magical powers of cinema. And film has always informed my painting, both the visceral quality of the medium and the manipulation of time and space... I see film as an extension of painting, a synthesis between image, sound and colour. While I am preoccupied with the history of painting, I see it as not unlike archaeology - peeling back layers to reveal understanding. But rather than merely quoting from that history, I'm always seeking ways to make painting relevant today. Hence my incorporation of film, photographic references and reprographic processes. We are all passengers when it comes to watching moving images. Film has the power to transport us beyond the present, enabling us to imagine other possible worlds. The same goes for painting. Artists are often a barometer of events in the world: they can synthesise socio-political and environmental concerns by means of powerful visual encapsulations. Blurring the boundaries of fact and fiction, artists can sometimes deal with the overload of media information - and misinformation - doing so with clarity, but always with a certain poetic detachment.
