Notes:Shields constructed of wicker (i.e, cane or rattan) have long been used in battle in the Solomon Islands and were said to have been made on New Georgia, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, and the Florida Islands. The finest shields were said to have been made on Guadalcanal and I that is likely the origin of this shield. Wicker shields like this fine example are adorned black designs that are either woven in during the construction of the shield or painted on. Shield were an important item owned by each warrior.
