Lot Description:A Rare Carved Wood Ancestors Head from Kupkein Village, Upper Sepik River Area, East Sepik Province,
Together with a Finely Carved Small Basket Hook from the Middle Sepik River Area. The wood ancestor head from Kupkein Village are extremely rare to find in this area, when I visited Kupkein & Swagap Villages in 1986 there was no carvings to be seen or purchased, I asked the older men if they were still carving and the said no that was our grandparents' time. Its known that the late Douglas Newton the former curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art had collected some artworks from these two villages in the late 1960s and were published in his book on the Upper Sepik River "Crocodile & Cassowary "1971 and a similar carved face is page 42 no 67. Finely carved small Basket Hook from the Middle Sepik River area with a fine Ancestor Head finial & fine ochre painted designs. Both of these artworks have great artistic charm and I have kept them for a long time in my home.
