    H 54 - 59 cm
  • Provenance:
Todd Barlin Collection of Oceanic Art
  • Notes:
Papuan Gulf wood sculpture was often two-dimensional, consisting of board-like carvings and figures with designs in low relief like these three examples. Villages formerly had large communal men's houses divided into cubicles, each allotted to a particular clan or sub clan. Every cubicle contained a clan shrine, which housed the spirit boards, figures, human and animal skulls, and other sacred objects associated with the clan's various imunu Spirits. Papuan Gulf Art has always been one of my favorited art styles from New Guinea along with the Kwoma people from the Upper Sepik River area. These three Gope have been in my home for a long time where they were hung together basically as you see them in this photo.
