Lot Description:Two Fine Old Shell Sectioned Arm Guards from the Papuan Gulf, 19th Century
Every man wore one arm guard when using a bow & arrows, they protected the man's arm if the bamboo bow string broke it was under such tension it would cut a man's wrist to the artery and they could bleed to death. These were a technology used around New Guinea & indigenous people worldwide. When you look closely at these arm guards you can see the great time & effort it took to first make each piece & pierce them before they were bound together with bush fibre so they had some flexibility when worn.
