Lot Description:Ten Fine Antique Nose Ornaments from New Guinea and The Solomon Islands
Men & women all once had their noses pierced for wearing ornaments, the piercing of their noses was part of ritual or ceremonial growth into young adulthood. Including: on the top: Nose Ornament for the Kwiao People Central Malaita Islands the Solomons & also the Small One Far Right; The Middle: The Two Clam Shell Nose Ornaments from the Asmat called Bipane. These were in men's noses when they took them out to sell them to me, it's amazing how they thread them in from the edge; The Reddish Clamshell Nose Ornament with upturned ends, is a very fine 19th Century one from Rossel Island in the Massim Area; Far Left, I collected at Lake Sentani 40 years ago with my No B.234; Below that is a Small Shell Ornament From the Ramu Area that men wore and are seen depicted on Old Masks; The bottom three are Pig Bone Nose Ornaments also from the Asmat People and were being worn by men when collected. These were published in the Sydney University Macleay Museum Exhibition Catalogue ADORNED Page 54 Top
